Izabela Pluta was born in Warsaw, Poland, and migrated to Australia in 1987. She completed her undergraduate studies in Fine Art at The University of Newcastle and has an MFA from The College of Fine Art, The University of New South Wales in Sydney.
Read MorePluta's works in photomedia and installation and has exhibited widely in Australia. In 2006 she was awarded an Australia Council for the Arts Studio residency in Barcelona. She has undertaken other residencies including at the Red Gate Gallery in Beijing and International Art Space Kellerberrin, WA. In 2008 Izabela was awarded a Freedman Foundation Traveling Scholarship for Emerging Artists and an Ian Potter Cultural Grant for a studio residency at the Cite des Arts International in Paris. In 2008 she received an Australia Council for the Arts New Work Grant and in 2010 she was awarded the Qantas Foundation Contemporary Art Award (NSW).
Izabela Pluta currently lectures in Photomedia at The College of Fine Art (COFA), UNSW and The National Art School in Sydney.
Pluta’s work is based around the idea of evoking a sense of loss or longing for where we have never been or may never experience - places visited, lived in or imaginary. Like many of Pluta’s works, this project derives from personal encounters with certain places. They may call to mind images on the periphery of vision – places noticed momentarily and forgotten. Each depicting a form of aging or decline: vanished places, experiences, intervals or instants.
