Nicole Kelly is attracting attention for her evocative, painterly works. Edmond Capon, former director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, has described her work as ‘bold and confident. It’s got spirit, that intellectual dynamic that comes out of the soul of an artist.’
Kelly’s artistic practice examines relationship to place, being grounded in the landscape, the private interior, as well as drawing influence from naturalist literature. She develops her paintings in the studio from pen line drawings, filtering through memory, impressions, colours and moods of her environment.
‘Through my paintings, my desire is to walk a line between a literal reality and a poetic interpretation.’ (Nicole Kelly, 2016)
Kelly won the prestigious Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship in 2009, and has also been awarded the Glebe Youth Art Award 2013, Hazelhurst Gallery Local Artist Award 2011, Gruner Prize 2008 and Robert Le Gay Brereton Drawing Prize 2007. She has been a finalist in awards including the Wynne Prize, the Black Swan Prize and the Portia Geach Memorial Award. Kelly’s work has been curated into exhibitions at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and the Moran Gallery. She recently undertook an AADK residency in Spain.
Nicole completed a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) at The National Art School, Sydney.
