The 43rd iteration of FIAC will be the Parisian art fair’s largest to date. This year’s edition will feature a new performance festival titled the Parades section, and from across the main venue Grand Palais, the Petit Palais will also showcase a host of exhibitors. A total of 186 galleries will participate.
Kukje Gallery and Tina Kim Gallery will focus on the works of Dansaekhwa, showcasing artists such as Park Seo-Bo, Ha Chong-Hyun, Kwon Young-woo, and Chung Chang-sup, along with those of Wook-kyung Choi and Kim Yong-Ik. In addition, the galleries will present Kyungah Ham’s embroidery series, Kimsooja’s Bottari (2011), Bill Viola’s The Encounter (2012), four of Haegue Yang’s new works including The Intermediate – Uninhabited Island in Fiction II (2016), and new work by Ghada Amer.
Ugo Rondinone Participates in Place Vendôme Project
Ugo Rondinone will participate in the outdoor installation program of the 43rd edition of FIAC, which will take place from October 20 to 23 at Place Vendôme, Paris, France. In 2012, FIAC initiated a program where one select artist exhibits a site-specific outdoor installation piece during the fair at Place Vendôme. This program has exhibited notable artists such as Jaume Plensa in 2012, Tadashi Kawamata in 2013, and Paul McCarthy in 2014. Last year, artist Dan Graham created an architectural installation.
This year, Ugo Rondinone will install a grouping of works for an exhibition titled, every time the sun comes up, consisting of five sculptures from his series made up of life-sized aluminum castings of an ancient olive tree. One work from this series, summer moon, was installed upon the artist’s show feelings, at Kukje Gallery in 2015. The artist will also exhibit five works from a series of bluestone sculptures that were also part of his solo exhibition at Kukje Gallery. These playful anthropomorphic figures have equally playful titles such as the nosy, the anomalous, and the observant, all three of which were exhibited at Kukje Gallery. The gnarled aluminum tree sculptures which hail from the same series as summer moon have been painted white, suggesting a distant past and the elusiveness of memory. The bluestone figures, despite their rough form, capture a surprisingly sensitive human portrayal, lending the stone an uncanny vitality. The two unique series will be installed so as to mirror one another. Students at the Ecole du Louvre will participate as docents to introduce and explain the series to fairgoers.
Haegue Yang Holds Catalogue Launch Talk
Haegue Yang is launching a new catalogue published as part of her exhibition Lingering Nous at the Centre Pompidou, and will present a talk during FIAC to introduce the book and contextualize her exhibition. The catalogue includes a comprehensive overview of her 19 major blind installations and is accompanied by essays by curator Nicolas Liucci-Goutnikov and Thomas McDonough, a professor of Art History at Binghamton University in the United States. The catalogue Lingering Nous is a collaborative effort between the Centre Pompidou and Les Presses du réel. The artist talk will be held at 7PM, on Friday, October 21, 2016.
Yang will also be on hand at a launch event at 5PM, October 22 for the new publication commemorating her exhibition An Opaque Wind Park in Six Folds at Portugal’s Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art.
The artist will give a lecture at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design in Manila, the Philippines, on November 17.
