Victoria Miro will participate in Art Basel 2014 (Stand N7, Hall 2) and is delighted to present Kara Walker's large scale installation,THE SOVEREIGN CITIZENS SESQUICENTENNIAL CIVIL WAR CELEBRATION at this year's Art Basel Unlimited.
The gallery is also taking over the late-nineteenth-century Schloss Sihlberg in Zurich from 14-22 June for a special presentation of works that draw on theories of abstraction and repetition, featuring new white radial text paintings by Idris Khan; works from Yayoi Kusama’s ongoing Infinity Net series and her iconic accumulation sculpture Prisoners Door, 1994; and geometric abstract sculptures by Conrad Shawcross.
Basel highlights include a major new white Infinity Net painting and new bronze pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama, both shown for the first time. Kusama’s record-breaking South American touring exhibition has recently opened at Instituto Tomie Ohtake, São Paulo, and Victoria Miro will show new pumpkin paintings and sculptures in London this September. Other works include a large-scale abstract painting by Spanish artist Secundino Hernández, whose first solo exhibition with the gallery is on view at Victoria Miro, Wharf Road until 2 August; a substantial new collage by Kara Walker, whose critically acclaimed Creative Time commission is on view at the Domino Sugar Factory, NY through July 6; and new sculpture by Sarah Sze.
Also presented for the first time is Four Seasons, 2014, a large-scale photographic work by Idris Khan that relates to the artist’s acclaimed collaboration with choreographer Wayne McGreogor and composer Max Richter on a new ballet showing as part of the current season at the Opernhaus Zürich. An abstract photographic work from Stan Douglas’s recent Corrupt Files series signals two important presentations for the artist in Munich this month: a substantial exhibition Mise en scène opens at Haus der Kunst in Munich on 19 June, and Douglas’s innovative theatre production Helen Lawrence, described as 'live cinema', will have its European première at the Münchner Kammerspiele on 18 June.
Figurative painting will feature prominently, with works by renowned British painter Celia Paul, whose exhibition is currently on view at Victoria Miro though 2 August; paintings by Chantal Joffe and by Alice Neel; a new Art Fair painting by Eric Fischl; and collage Mountain of prayer, 2014 by Wangechi Mutu. Neel, Fischl and Mutu will have solo exhibitions at Victoria Miro this October.
Kara Walker at Unlimited, Booth U1
THE SOVEREIGN CITIZENS SESQUICENTENNIAL CIVIL WAR CELEBRATION is a large-scale installation by Kara Walker comprising twenty-eight white cut paper elements adhered to a dark grey wall. The work is the most recent and one of the most ambitious single-wall works by the artist using the formal language of the silhouette, a medium Walker has explored with formal sophistication and conceptual rigour for over two decades.
Unlimited is Art Basel's pioneering exhibition platform for projects that transcend the limitations of a classical art-show stand. The innovative work includes out-sized sculpture and paintings, video projections, large-scale installations, and live performances. Unlimited is curated by New York-based curator Gianni Jetzer.
