Whistle is pleased to present Approximation, an exhibition curated by Suzy Park. Approximation suggests that the artist's thought, the material being of an artwork, and the language surrounding an artwork cannot engage in any correspondence between one another. Rather, an artist's unique abstraction is born from the combination of all senses chosen in their traversal back and forth between thought and matter, as demonstrated in works of sculpture by Sueyon Hwang, and works of painting by Kim Jipyeong and Jazoo Yang. Approximation will be on view from 13 January to 25 February, 2023.
The exhibition was conceived from the base intuition of understanding and accepting the abstractness of each artwork. Curator Suzy Park states that this understanding is an "approximation" of the artwork's observer and artist of each other. Likewise, she emphasizes that artistic autonomy is maximized in the approximated relationship, one in which neither side falls perfectly into place.
Korean painter Kim Jipyeong questions traditional "ways of seeing" by understanding the contemporaneity of a work through its internal structure. Kim reconstructs the cultural significance of janghwang, Korean traditional methods of mounting books, albums and scrolls, giving new form to traditional structures of reasoning.
Jazoo Yang's practice reflects a para-archaeological ethos; the fragments that Yang collects from the streets contain the city's time. Once collaged, the resulting artwork speaks directly and indirectly of the "natural world" of the city, and may often be read with an overlapping of the social context of abstraction.
Sueyon Hwang uses a diverse array of materials, such as paper, aluminum foil, sand, stone, and 3D printing, in the pursuit of form. By crushing, folding and stacking these materials, Hwang works to create "the proper shape."
Additionally, the No__u__skop program will be held three times over the course of the exhibition to encourage "practicing intuition." No__u__skop provides an opportunity for participants to share their intuitive opinion on the form and contents of each artist's artwork, and participation is open to all audiences. An RSVP list will be made available in February.
