About

Founded in 2004 in the 798 Art District of Beijing, the contemporary art gallery White Space has successfully launched the careers of numerous emerging artists over the past ten years, bringing their work to leading biennials, museums and art institutions nationally and internationally. The gallery was relocated to the current 1,500-square-meter space in Caochangdi in 2009 to embark on a new series of art programs, becoming the first contemporary art gallery in China to focus on working with young artists. The gallery has worked alongside each artist to deepen individual artistic practices through its curatorial and research-oriented approach, cooperating extensively with art institutions, curators and critics, and becoming one of the foremost pioneering spaces for art in China and Asia.

Collaborating with emerging and established artists, White Space pushes the boundaries of contemporary art and provides a stimulating platform for art and artists, supported by cultivated curatorial exhibitions, publications, and relationships with various art fairs, institutions, and foundations. By exploring the possibilities of contemporary art with young and mid-career artists as a main focus, and unlocking the potential of art, the gallery functions as a platform to stimulate and connect the power of art in all fields of society.

The Artists of White Space

White Space represents over 20 artists, with plans set in place to grow that number in the years to come. On that roster are a mixture of young Chinese emerging and established artists working in an expansive range of media and techniques—from painting, printing, and sculpture to photography, video, and multi-media installations. Included in that number are several prominent artists such as He Xiangyu, Liu Shiyuan, Li Liao, Shi Zhiying, and Wang Tuo. Not just limited to Chinese artists, the gallery also exhibits the work of artists such as Ignacio Uriarte, Christine Sun Kim and Ce Jian. More recently the gallery has taken on younger emerging artists like Zhang Zipiao and Tong Wenmin.

What to look out for at White Space

Supporting their young artists both nationally and on an international stage, White Space participates in major art fairs inside and outside China. This includes major fairs such as China International Gallery Exposition; Beijing Contemporary Art Expo; ART TAIPEI; West Bund Art & Design, Shanghai; The Armory Show, New York; ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair; and Art Basel in Hong Kong, Miami Beach, and Basel.
