In discussing Lee Bae's works, the artist's cultural background and his preferred medium of charcoal are often referred to. The significance of the medium within the traditions of Eastern philosophy and its repressed formative elaboration associated with Korean abstract art no doubt ties in with the artist's cultural roots. Nevertheless, what we try to emphasise in this exhibition is his perspective as a contemporary artist who joins the contemporary social trend which should be considered just as importantly as the artist’s cultural roots.
