Baptiste Ibar Biography

Born in Paris in 1977, he currently lives and works Biarrizt, France. Having emigrated to and grown up in the suburbs of New York City, Baptiste has become fascinated by indigenous peoples and their art from which he draws on the use of symbolic imagery and a variety of painting techniques to achieve a sense of contemplation and complexity. The artist investigates how space and time can be manipulated on a two-dimensional plane through the layering of different elements to create an almost architectural space filled with life forms and possible questions. In 2004 he collaborated with director Michel Gondry to make a series of disaster paintings required for his film "The Science of Sleep." After the release of the film and Michel Gondry's exhibition at Deitch Projects, which featured the Disasterology calendar, Baptiste was engaged in one project after another. He commissioned a large-scale public work through an NEA grant for Artspace, New Haven, entitled "Ghost tree" and a solo exhibition at the Glenn Horowitz bookstore in East Hampton. In 2012 he made his European debut in London with the exhibition "Before your eyes" Busts, at Viktor Wynd Fine Art in collaboration with Art Barter. His paintings are in private and corporate collections around the world.
