Christian Brandl's paintings stage the inert potential of action. His static paintings recall 1950's psychological thrillers flatten to a series of planes and opaque forms. The motionless-ness of his works belies an ability from the artist to construct complex narratives, reminiscent of the melancholic figures of Hopper and the uncanniness of Cindy Shermans subjects. The technical proficiency of Brandl's paintings, combined with his restrained palette and cinematic constructions creates a surreal tableaux of protagonist whose relationship with one another is uncertain.
