By 1965 there was a growing critical appreciation of Aspden’s art. For Aspden, colour, music and landscape were central to his practice as an artist. The ‘hard-edge’ paintings established his reputation in the 1960s and then the nuanced colour abstracts of the 1970s to 2000s where he found the purest expression of his art.

Aspden’s work has been included in international exhibitions including the Bienal de São Paulo, Brazil (1971). He exhibited in the Sydney Biennale, at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (1972) and won the Wynne Prize in 1995.

Aspden’s work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and Art Gallery of New South Wales, amongst other state and regional galleries, and corporate and private collections.
