Del Kathryn Barton Biography

Del Kathryn Barton’s paintings are informed by paradox, celebrating the notion that humanity remains intimately connected, spiritually and biologically with the natural world, yet also perpetually anxious, desiring to retrieve a paradise lost.

Barton graduated from the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales in 1993, holding her first solo exhibition at Arthaus Gallery in Sydney in 1995. She was the inaugural artist in the ANZ Emerging Artists Programme in 2004 and the recipient of the Archibald Prize in 2008. In her winning painting You are What is Most Beautiful About Me, she depicted herself as a kind of fertility goddess, nurturing her children. Typically, the elongated and decorative forms of Barton’s figures become one with the organic natural world they inhabit, yet emotionally they also appear curiously detached and disconnected from their surroundings.

This subtle underlying tension in her work has contributed to her current status with the artist listed as the country’s most collectable artist in the Australian Art Collector in 2007. Barton has work in the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and University of Sydney Union Collection, Sydney.
