Farideh Lashai was born in Rasht, Iran in 1944. ; She studied German literature in Frankfurt before beginning her art career at Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts. After graduating, she painted and worked as a crystal designer at Reidel Studios in southern Austria and Studio Rosenthal in Selb, Germany. Crystal design became Lashai’s inspiration for sculpting, which she explored later in her career.

Her work draws inspiration from Persian folklore, literature and the art historical canon. Bold abstraction and intricate ornament, present throughout her work, addresses the relationship between objects and their environment.
Lashai had thirty-three solo shows in Iran, Europe and the USA and was involved in over sixty collective exhibitions including Iranian Contemporary, Christie’s King Street, London, Liu-Haisu Art Museum, Shanghai, Ludwig Museum, Koblenz, Rome Expo, and Art Basel. Most recently her work appeared in the 2012 Sydney Biennial, and the 2014 Moscow Biennial. Lashai died in February 2013.
