Using the most realistic and fictional medium of photography, Han Sungpil has stirred a sensation in contemporary art world through his Façade Project. This project searches for the relationship and connection between reality and ideal world, through Trompe-l’oeil one finds on the veil or mural over buildings under construction. The images express states of insecurity of desire in urban life, and also stand for device that satisfies the human desire to experience the ideal. Han has taken a new approach in his recent works, in which the artist installs large works in the actual site. Real image of Han’s work is magnified and printed on the veil over construction sites of cultural property. The site is then photographed and printed, being reborn as layers in the photograph. Unfolding a world where reality and fantasy are ambiguously blurred, Han’s works reflects the desires of the modern man to experience the ideal in their everyday life.
