Joseph Klibansky Biography

Klibansky uses photographs taken during his travels to inform his artwork, juxtaposing architecture with slices of urban and natural landscapes.

Butterflies, birds, nymphs and impressionist-esque shimmers are mingled with images projected on giant screens, street signs and sparkling automobiles. Although nothing reflects reality better than a photograph, in order to convey the truth Klibansky takes advantage of a lie.

Since 2016, he has worked on a series of Pop Art-inspired sculptures casted in bronze, such as Reflections on Truth (2012). His 2017 exhibition Leap of Faith: at the Museum de Fundatie in Zwole, in which he presented several works he had shown at the 57th Venice Biennale, explored the nature of hope and belief through painting and sculpture. His most recent work, The Thinker (2018), is a bronze sculpture that forms part of the Spaceman series. It depicts an Astronaut in different situations, facing or symbolising contemporary issues — religious wars, social inequalities, lack of imagination, fast consumerism — that are affecting our society. The sculpture was unveiled outside Maddox Gallery in Gstaad, Switzerland, at the end of November 2019, where it will be exhibited throughout the highly-anticipated Winter Season.
