In 2003 Murray commenced the renowned SALT project which ran until 2010 and comprised of 16 journeys to the centre of Lake Eyre in South Australia where he lived alone for up to five weeks at a time. Conceptually an exploration into visual and cultural ‘space’, the series has been exhibited in major institutions and galleries worldwide. The Salt series sits in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; the Australian Parliament House, Canberra; the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra; and many prestigious private and corporate collections.

The ABC commissioned a documentary film to be made on the SALT project in 2008. Working with Director Michael Angus, Murray worked as cinematographer on the film. The resulting film, also titled SALT won over 15 international awards and played at over 60 festivals as well as screening on the ABC and PBS in the USA.

Murray is currently working on the Hector project, photographing thunderstorms on the Tiwi Islands and on a long term stills and video project on the Greenland Icecap entitled Nothing on Earth. Commissioned by the ABC, the Greenland project includes a feature documentary on the crossing of the icecap to be filmed in 2012.
