Ricardo Mazal Biography

Born in Mexico in 1950, Ricardo Mazal has become one of Mexico's leading contemporay artists whose multidisciplinary practice explores themes of death, transformation, and regeneration. His work has been greatly influenced by his childhood and upbringing in Mexico, resulting in abstract paintings of vivid colour that reflect the visual language and culture apparent in Mexico. He likes to explore the full potential of the canvas through strong lines, pure colours, painterly effects, and text.

He has held numerous solo exhibitions in museums across the United States and Mexico, including four retrospectives of his work at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Monterrey (2000), Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City (2006), Queretaro Museum of Art (2009), Abstract Art Museum Manuel Felguerez (2010), as well as thematic exhibitions at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art ( 2006), the National Museum of Anthropology (2004-2005) and the Cultural Center Indianilla Mexico City (2012) among others. His work is included in several public and private collections including; the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporay Art, and the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros in New York, among others.
