In the late 1950s, five artists, all gay, living within a few blocks of one another in New York, redirected the course of American painting. They abandoned gestural expressionism and laid the groundwork for the pop and minimalist idioms of the following decade. Four of them have received plenty of credit for doing so: Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and Agnes Martin. The fifth was Robert Indiana.
Forty years after its establishment, Krystyna Gmurzynska and Mathias Rastorfer relocated the gallery from Cologne to its new flagship location in Zurich’s Paradeplatz in 2005. The building that currently houses the gallery dates back to 1857 and it is the same building in which the Dada movement was founded in 1917. The first exhibition in Zurich was a solo exhibition by Alexander Calder entitled, The Modernist, that was thoroughly endorsed by the Calder Foundation, who described it is as, 'rare to experience a presentation of this quality outside of a museum'. As with each exhibition at the gallery the show featured a fully illustrated catalogue with important essays.
Galerie Gmurzynska continues to present unique exhibitions that are both historically well researched and scientifically documented. It also continues to work with leading art historians as well as collaborating with museums on exhibitions and for the enlargement of their permanent collections. Additionally, it currently participates in several art fairs such as Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Basel Hong Kong, Frieze Masters in London, Salon in New York and Art Basel, Switzerland. In the past it has taken part in FIAC, Abu Dhabi and PAD New York.
Both Krystyna Gmurzynska and Mathias Rastorfer were awarded the Chevalier des Art et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture. Krystyna Gmurzynska was the first foreigner to receive the merit for special achievements by Michael Shvydkoy, the Russian Minister of Culture, recognising her 'important contribution to scientific research, and for the organisation of exhibitions in the field of Russian art of the 20th century.'
Founded in SoHo in 1989, Kasmin cultivates a program in which historic figures of Post-War and Modernism are in meaningful dialogue with the evolving practice of both emerging and established contemporary artists.
The gallery represents and advocates for the legacy of such estates as Constantin Brancusi, William N. Copley, Max Ernst, Simon Hantaï, Jane Freilicher and Robert Motherwell. It has developed the careers of and continues to represent significant contemporary artists including Walton Ford, Robert Indiana, Iván Navarro, Les Lalanne and Roxy Paine.
With three spaces in Chelsea, New York, Kasmin mounts ambitious concurrent exhibitions alongside participation in major art fairs worldwide. In Fall 2018, the gallery will open its newest and largest space at 509 West 27th Street, which will expand the gallery’s footprint and provide a platform to build upon our curatorial mission. The new building will also feature a planted roof purposefully designed for exhibiting monumental sculptures, which parallels the gallery’s well-known engagement in international public art projects.
The gallery is dedicated to furthering the academic research of its artists and their oeuvres. The gallery has published comprehensive scholarly books, including William N. Copley X-Rated, Simon Hantaï’s Blancs, Alexander the Great: The Iolas Gallery 1955-1987, Impasse Ronsin and the first English translated monograph-scale book of Max Ernst’s sculpture. In Spring 2018, the gallery published a catalogue raisonné on Lee Krasner’s Umber Paintings.
Waddington Custot was formed through the partnership of long-time London art dealer, Leslie Waddington, and French art dealer Stephane Custot in 2011. Located in Cork Street since 1958, formerly as Waddington Galleries, the gallery has a rich heritage and an international reputation for quality and expertise.
From the late 50s, exhibited artists included those coming out of St Ives, Patrick Heron, Terry Frost and Roger Hilton, and a new generation of British painters and sculptors, Peter Blake and Patrick Caulfield, Elisabeth Frink, Anthony Caro and William Turnbull. The gallery would become instrumental in the promotion of post-war American art in England, showing the influential work of Milton Avery in 1962, Abstract Expressionists and the emergent Color Field painting of Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, and Helen Frankenthaler. In the early 70s, contemporary shows became interspersed with the work of European and British masters, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Fernand Léger, Jean Dubuffet and Ben Nicholson. New European and American painters and sculptors were introduced in the 80s, including Barry Flanagan and Michael Craig-Martin, Julian Schnabel, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd and Robert Rauschenberg, and in the 90s, young British artists, Ian Davenport and Fiona Rae.
Waddington Custot represents contemporary British artists David Annesley, Peter Blake and Ian Davenport and French painter Fabienne Verdier, sculptors Jedd Novatt and Pablo Reinoso, the Estates of Allan D'Arcangelo, Patrick Caulfield, Barry Flanagan and Patrick Heron. The inventory includes works by modern British masters, Henry Moore and Ben Nicholson, and important twentieth-century European artists, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Jean Dubuffet, Josef Albers, Fausto Melotti, and Antoni Tàpies. The long-standing focus on American artists continues with representation of Robert Indiana and works by John Chamberlain, Peter Halley, Robert Rauschenberg, Haim Steinbach, Frank Stella and John Wesley.
