When I was last in New York I took the bus an hour’s ride north of Manhattan, to historic Tappan, and visited Sean Scully in his studio. I first met the contemporary painter at his other New York studio in Chelsea, and also spent a great weekend with him when he was over in the UK, looking around Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Wakefield, as he prepared for his new exhibition.
Cheim & Read was founded in 1997 by John Cheim and Howard Read. The gallery actively represents an international group of leading contemporary artists and estates, embracing diverse artistic practices, from painting and sculpture to photography and video. Artists represented have exhibited extensively in museums and galleries world-wide, and are regularly included in exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale, Whitney Biennial, Carnegie International and Documenta. Established in New York City’s Chelsea neighbourhood, Cheim & Read has an airy, 6,000 square foot building with multiple spaces, allowing for intimate or expansive exhibition formats.
Cheim & Read is characterised by its commitment to a rigorous curatorial model. It is known for critical monographic exhibitions, including comprehensive, museum-quality surveys of work by William Eggleston (21st Century), Lynda Benglis (New Work), Louise Bourgeois (Suspension), Joan Mitchell (Trees), Milton Resnick (The Elephant in the Room) and Al Held (The Alphabet Paintings). In 2019, Cheim & Read will transition to a private practice, concentrating on sculpture commissions, special projects and the secondary market. Lisson Gallery is one of the most influential and longest-running international contemporary art galleries in the world. Today the gallery supports and develops 61 international artists across two exhibition spaces in London and two in New York as well as its new space in Shanghai. Established in 1967 by Nicholas Logsdail, Lisson Gallery pioneered the early careers of important Minimal and Conceptual artists, such as Art & Language, Carl Andre, Daniel Buren, Donald Judd, John Latham, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long and Robert Ryman among many others. In the spring of 2012, Wooson Gallery inaugurated the new space with the exhibition of the world's leading sculptor 'Tony Cragg' which was artist's first solo exhibition at a gallery in Korea. Including Tony Cragg, Wooson Gallery represents and promotes numerous important international artists for the first time in Korea such as Sean Scully, Jannis Kounellis, Hubert Scheibl, Andrei Molodkin, Barthélémy Toguo, and Kei Takemura. Also, Wooson Gallery presented the exhibition of Chung Sang-Hwa and Ha Chong-Hyun in 2013 and 2014, which contributed to arouse attention of Korean Monochrome in the international art word. In 2016, the gallery provides exhibitions of Choi Byung-So and Lee Kang-So at Musée d'art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Etienne, France, appraising Korean artists to the world.
