在《多切斯特项目》中,盖茨修复了多栋废弃建筑并将它们转变为非传统艺术机构与社交空间。这些建筑变成了“保存美国非洲裔文化的档案”,保存并展出了象征当地社区文化传承的书籍、黑胶唱片与手工艺品。2013年,盖茨说服芝加哥市政府将原定拆除的石岛信托和储蓄银行出售给他,出售条件是他会以艺术和文化项目来重新利用并复兴这栋老旧的建筑。这两个项目都是基于艺术家的“循环生态系统”理念,盖茨从这些废弃建筑中找到原材料并创造出雕塑与其他艺术品,而项目持续运营所需要的资金则全部来自作品销售所得。

盖茨获得过多个国际上重要的艺术奖项,包括纳什尔雕塑奖(2018年)、柯特·舒维特奖(2017年)及威尔士国际艺术奖(2015年)。
