Taiwanese artist WU Tien-chang (b. 1956) experienced first hand Taiwan’s transition from authoritarian rule to democracy after martial law was lifted in 1987. Well known for his socio-political commentary, originally as an oil painter before switching to digital photography and more recently to video, his work has been described as an echo of Taiwan’s search for its own identity.
