Zhou Wendou was born in 1970 in Beijing. In 1998, he went to Spain studying painting. In his ten years’ learning and artistic career in Spain, his creation has gone from Painting to Installation + Photography, and finally installation, which experienced a natural transformation process.
After returning to China in 2008, his Western style creation opened a different perspective for Chinese contemporary art. His works possess the humorous banter and good manner, being different from such so-called art creations that are thought as “contemporary”. When referring to “Contemporary Art”, we often rigidly consider such radical and pioneer themes as the supreme purposes. In particular, discussing the “Chinese Contemporary Art”, we may ignore the art’s function and role by itself. Art as the political and social function appears after itself, and it’s not innate. The significance of art itself is aesthetic education and is to promote people’s acknowledgement, giving the world a different perspective. So, allowing art to become a kind of ecology is also the art’s original state.
From Zhou’s installation works, we can easily feel the spontaneous state, which is calm, gentle, with a little humor, and not very exaggerated. This kind of touch, which is not ashamed (rather than stimulating), lets the visitors and readers live in a more peaceful state and have the self-acceptance review and change. It is peaceable and stable art ecology, closely like the original state of things.
