In videos structured as poetic vignettes, Chen Xiaoyun explores basic human themes, narratives, and conditions. Here the ordinary image of sugar boiling over into caramel provides a visual metaphor for the origins of the cosmos as well as a backdrop for a meditation on creation, spirituality, matter, and love. As in many of Chen’s videos, the singularity and simplicity of the narrator’s voice belies a deep ambivalence about about history and progress.
