A master of both Minimalism and Conceptual Art, the Hiroshi Sugimoto portraits displayed in Duddell’s build on the body of wax figures explored in his Dioramas series, featuring black-and-white portraits of historical figures and contemporary personalities, such as Henry VIII, Napoleon Bonaparte, Voltaire, and Princess Diana. Sugimoto isolates the wax effigies from the staged vignettes in Madame Tussaud's London Waxworks, posing them in three-quarter length view, and lighting them against black backdrops so as to create haunting portraits. His painterly renditions are lush with details and recall the works of Hans Holbein, Anthony van Dyck, and Jacques Louis David, from which many of the wax figures were originally drawn. Hiroshi Sugimoto is currently exhibited at the Tyler Print Institute, Singapore. Other recent solo exhibitions include those at Museum Brandhorst, Munich; La Verrière, Brussels; Le Forum, Tokyo; Miami Design District, Miami and Lille Metropole: Musée d'art moderne, d'art contemporian et d’art brut, Lille (2012) among many more.
