A Pile of Bricks IV: 82xl21 x 82 cm A Pile of Bricks II: 54x71.5x 51 cm Mona Hatoum's 'A Pile of Bricks' consists of a pile of terracotta bricks arranged on a wooden trolley. The holes in the bricks remind us of windows, and the bricks have been stacked to resemble a large office-type building or apartment block. The bricks have been partially gouged and indented, their flat facade caved in, as if from the damage of war or perhaps from inherent structural failure. Ready to be moved at any time, their presentation on a trolley further emphasises a condition of temporality, suggesting a nomadic or even homeless form of living while also recalling the commonplace sight of bricks being transported around a building site.
