For her encyclopedic project “Millet Mounds,” commissioned by UCCA in 2012 and later shown at the 2013 Venice Biennale, Kan Xuan traveled to every known imperial tomb in China, recording her encounter in a string of iPhone photos which were later edited into 173 stop-action films that at once catalogue and personalize a vast and abstract history. These images, extracted from four of the films, position ancient memorials in their quotidian context among fields and villages of contemporary China.
