One of the originators of the Post-Sense Sensibility project, Xiao Yu was also one of its more extreme practitioners, having made a body of early work involving uncanny taxidermic juxtapositions of animal forms. His more recent work, including his involvement with the collective Polit-Sheer-Form Office, has revolved more around ideas of metaphor and language. This painting manifests a pun—its Chinese title, literally translated “base material,” could refer to both a first layer of pigment on a painting or to the seasoning at the base of the spicy soup used in Sichuan hot pot—fitting as the textured monochrome actually consists of chill powder on canvas.
