Although his work during the Post-Sense Sensibility period mainly consisted of sculptural installations growing out of his training in set design, Zhang Hui has emerged in the past five years as one of Beijing’s most compelling painters. His most recent exhibition, Plaza, traces a single blue through multiple compositions and conversations, and includes the palette on which said blue was mixed, destroyed and converted into a monochrome painting in the same blue. “Onlookers” comes from an earlier series in which Zhang began to paint the relations between people, often including his own friends and collaborators.
