Working more as a documentary filmmaker than an artist, Zhao Liang has created complex and controversial stories of some of China’s most difficult sociopolitical milieux, working alternatively with and against government control. His “Petition” was a ten-year chronicle of citizens lodging complaints at the Office of Visits and Letters made on the sly; “Together,” produced with the support of the Ministry of Health, looked at people living with HIV/AIDS. This photographic triptych “Black Face, White Face,” juxtaposing a coal and a limestone miner, comes from an ongoing film project chronicling the impact of mineral extraction on landscapes and lives in Inner Mongolia.
