An outstanding feature of Tong Kunniaos work is the compilation of objets trouvées, which is showcasing his subversive sense of humour. His art deals with the meaning of the single object as a bearer of cultural identity, while simultaneously strategically confronting logic and material in a relaxed, seemingly absurd manner. Most and foremost, he is well known for his assemblages, which are created using materials that have been found on the flea market or on the street. The resulting works confront the viewer with objects that are considered as 'junk' within his surroundings. To Kunniao 'junk is not only fun, it is gold, too.' His kinetic assemblages are reminiscent of Jean Tinguely's loud, machine-drive machine sculptures from the 1960's.
