Hauser & Wirth returns to FIAC in 2019 with a booth that celebrates the artists from the gallery's roster and the stories that unfold around individual works which traverse decades and continents.
Among the landmark paintings, Philip Guston's Curtain and Sea (1979) belongs to the artist's last great body of work. Dissolving the clear distinctions between interior and exterior space, Curtain and Sea engages with the notion of the 'theatrum mundi', the world as a stage. The piece was realised in the last year before the artist's passing, following a dramatic shift in direction at the end of the 1960s.
Other highlights from the gallery's represented estates include Louise Bourgeois's I Want To Be Sure You Love Me !! (2008), a sweeping installation that pairs 15 fabric works with 15 works on paper, tender bricolages of paint, pencil and etching. The fraying swatches of tapestry resonate with Bourgeois's childhood experiences.
More recent signature works on the booth include Paul McCarthy's sculpture SC Western Pink River (2014-2017), a molten figure of John Wayne, the titan of the American Western film genre, which belongs to the artist's ongoing 'Stagecoach' project. Often sardonic, McCarthy's work challenges societal norms, mining the psychological implications of cultural production and American myths.
New, never-before-seen paintings from the gallery's roster of contemporary artists are Pyramid (2019) by Lorna Simpson, and Painting 6 (2019) by Mark Bradford. The latter work coincides with Bradford's concurrent exhibition at Hauser & Wirth London. The FIAC presentation also encompasses exemplary works by Larry Bell, Günther Förg, Zhang Enli, Charles Gaines, Luchita Hurtado, Fausto Melotti and Takesada Matsutani whose exhibition is currently on view at Hauser & Wirth Zürich.
