Frieze has announced the winners of the inaugural Frieze Seoul Stand Prizes, which go to the best stands—more typically called booths—at this year's fair.
New York's Tina Kim Gallery was awarded the fair's Stand Prize in the main section for their presentation of Dansaekhwa artists, a group of Korean artists who gravitated towards monochrome, process-driven works beginning in the 1950s.
The booth featured works by Ha Chong-Hyun, Park Seo-Bo, and Kim Tschang-Yeul.
'We wanted to curate a booth that is a reflection of my programme while considering the unique audience that Seoul draws, as well as artists and ideas I have always been committed to,' said the gallery's founder, Tina Kim.
Seoul-based CYLINDER was awarded the Asia Focus Stand Prize for their presentation of emerging visual artist Sinae Yoo.
The booth featured the artist's new series of oil paintings titled 'Post-truth'. The works combine mediaeval painting with internet culture, while envisioning what it might be like to dream in high definition (HD).
'This is our first year showing at Frieze Seoul and it couldn't have gone any better,' said Dooyong Ro, Director of CYLINDER.
The winning galleries were selected by jurors including Ilmin Museum Chief Curator Juli Yoon, Leeum Museum of Art curator Serena Sungah Choo, and Tate curator Alvin Li.
Goodman Gallery, Jessica Silverman, and Osaka's Marco Gallery received honourable mentions.
Frieze has also awarded Stand Prizes at its London and New York fairs. Frieze London's Stand Prize went to Thomas Dane Gallery in 2022 for a presentation curated by the artist Anthea Hamilton. —[O]
