For his first Solo Show at the main exhibition room of our gallery in Seneca Street, Xevi Solà immerses himself in scenes populated by attractive and happy individuals, where beauty is an underlying element. Here, he allows himself to simplify his strokes and forms, accelerating the creative process. He even lets colors flow intuitively and freely, seeking to manifest his calligraphy, which he has always considered deficient, in his strokes.
From his perspective, he believes that distancing oneself from literalness is a valuable approach in painting, although he acknowledges that it can be challenging for figurative painters. However, he emphasizes that it is not an impossible task and demonstrates it through the continuous evolution of his aesthetic. He has left behind deep and baroque narratives in favor of apparent lightness in his scenes, with the purpose of emotionally relaxing the viewer. Despite these changes, Xevi has always been a portraitist. He specializes in psychological portraits, aiming to capture the personality and emotions of his subjects. This gift is what connects his work with those seeking the art of this Spanish artist. In his strokes, viewers find a captivating and enduring fascination.
‘Common People’ is presented as a project in which Xevi explores a new artistic direction by moving away from the need to correct errors and embracing the purpose of accepting and using them to his advantage, basing his creative process on a philosophy that values freedom over a rigid methodology. In this way, seeking the essence of painting, simplifying forms, and freeing himself from the need for explanations. Although Solà does not portray himself, it is impossible not to recognize the essence of Xevi in his work. Every element of his oils reflects his unique identity. His work is a window into his inner world.
We invite viewers to embrace error, find certainty in un-certainty, and return to the fundamentals. We invite you to get to know him better through the eyes of other people, common people.
‘I paint quickly, more than ever, to regain freshness. It doesn’t always work, what’s more, I often spoil pictures and start over and over again, looking for the gesture, like someone who practices a new signature and I draw a lot.
