Press Release

‘Box Box’ includes works from Annamarie Ho’s ongoing series: Tute and Home Depot Paintings, both of which conceptually and formally investigate painting without the actual use of paint. Tute mines the system of sponsorship and design of Formula One racing suits, resulting in ‘paintings’ composed of sewn fabric and logo-less patches that also allude to hard-edge abstraction. Home Depot Paintings transforms everyday mass-produced objects found in hardware stores into colorfully-glazed ceramic works, which are installed on the wall as ‘paintings’—historically the most privileged form of art. The title ‘Box Box’ references both theFormula One command for a pit stop and the white cube nature of the exhibition space.

About the Artist

Annamarie Ho’s practice examines a diverse range of subjects, all which are products of capitalist consumer culture. Her investigations of the commercialization of desire and gendered hegemony in popular culture and the art-historical canon are intertwined with the formal compositional elements of each work.
