Dirimart proudly presents Cosmic Abyss, a solo exhibition by Anselm Reyle, showcasing an immersive installation that draws the viewer in with its gravitational pull. It is an expedition into the enigmatic world of Reyle's artistic cosmos that challenges the boundaries of perception, blurring the lines between the tangible and the intangible, the known and the mysterious.
Reyle's artistic oeuvre is known for its daring exploration of abstract shapes and his inventive utilisation of traditional as well as non-traditional materials, pushing the boundaries of conventional art interpretations. It navigates contradictions, fusing rebellion with tradition and decay with vibrancy, all while incorporating a satirical disposition that cleverly critiques clichés. With an incisive wit, Reyle's multidimensional practice delves into the paradoxes and ironies of modernity. By juxtaposing elements and reimagining them in new contexts, Reyle reconstructs narratives and rewrites the Zeitgeist. This deliberate approach resists conformity, providing a thought-provoking counterpoint to the homogenisation of artistic expression, and simultaneously challenges the prevailing trends and expectations of contemporary art. In Cosmic Abyss, Reyle challenges viewers to explore fresh perspectives in our ever-evolving world. In a world that favours the ordinary, his work is anything but.
As viewers step into the exhibition space, they find themselves surrounded by walls painted in the deepest black, creating a backdrop that accentuates the artworks upon it. Distorted reflections of these artworks become visible on the stainless steel sculptures strategically placed throughout the room. This immersive installation blurs the line between the viewer and the artwork, allowing one to step into a cosmic narrative.
The free-standing, large-scale stainless-steel sculptures, along with the wall reliefs, appear almost ethereal as if they exist in a virtual dimension. They employ clean lines and minimalist design, but it is far from sterile; they radiate a unique sense of energy and presence, inviting viewers to explore the interplay between the sculptures' form and the surrounding space. They seem to dissolve into the space enhanced by the black-painted walls that absorb and mirror the surrounding neon lights. Notably, the first neon lights used by Reyle were repurposed from discarded neon signs, adding an element of found object artistry to the exhibition.
Reyle's artistic vision extends to the walls themselves. Typically executed on white surfaces, for Cosmic Abyss, he employs a unique technique, painting directly on the black walls using a fire extinguisher. This negative version of his wall paintings creates a striking contrast that resonates with the concept of black holes—an intense concentration of energy and matter in the vastness of space.
Towards the end of the exhibition, viewers engage in an absorbing exploration of Reyle's latest artistic endeavours. This occursion involves the deliberate embrace of imperfection seen in the Fat Lava pottery and the precision found in his visually captivating new painting series, where he draws from his evolved colour and material repertoire, melding elements like neon hues, tactile textures, foils, and more into a liberating, abstract form. This combination generates a profound sense that the exhibition inspires a sensation akin to embarking on a journey within a painting.
Inviting viewers to Reyle's multifaceted artistic vision, Cosmic Abyss reshapes conventional norms into something unpredictable, provocative, and timely, conveying rebellion and raw emotion—much like punk defying societal norms and conventional artistic standards.
The exhibition will be on view at Dirimart Dolapdere until 19 November 2023.
