Press Release

Ceal Floyer (March 7 – April 14, 2023)
Isa Melsheimer (April 25 – May 26, 2023)
Karin Sander (June 7 – July 7, 2023)

In a reciprocal gesture of bringing projects by these three Berlin-based artists to our gallery in Seoul, we are delighted to present an exhibition of the work of eight Korean artists in parallel in both the Berlin and Seoul galleries this summer.

The first intervention by Ceal Floyer, her 2002 work Warning Birds, covers the glass pane with countless dark silhouettes of birds. The transparency we associate with windows is interrupted and the function of both the window and the cautionary stickers is undone. In addition, recent and historical works by Floyer will be presented throughout the other rooms of the gallery.

The group of three projects takes as point of departure the distinct properties of the exhibition space: framed by a glass window, it resembles a vitrine or storefront.

Three special talks by Hyunjung Woo, Curator at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art will take place at Esther Schipper, Seoul during each presentation:

Ceal Floyer: Saturday March 11, 2pm
Isa Melsheimer: Saturday April 29, 2pm
Karin Sander: Saturday June 10, 2pm

About the Artist

Known for her engagement with the history of architectural styles—especially the legacy of Modernism and 1950s–70s examples of concrete architecture—Isa Melsheimer’s works are expressions of her intense research as well as formal investigations. The artist acts as archeologist of often forgotten or neglected buildings, recreating their distinctive shapes both from her study and from her vivid re-imagining of the forms and the spirit of the structures.
