Galería Hilario Galguera Madrid presents Lo hecho, hecho está, the first solo exhibition of Maxime Brigou (Belgium, 1992) in Spain. The show brings together the artist's most recent body of work, including a series of paintings exhibited for the first time. The title of the exhibition captures creative processes and the ability to embrace the decisions and actions that propel us into the future. The opening will take place during Opening Night at Calle Dr. Fourquet, on June 2, 2023 at 7pm.
The writer Victor Hugo said that "memory is an invisible presence"; we find something like this in the work of Maxime Brigou and her great wall sculptures. With a pictorial heritage, Brigou alludes to the form and the archetype that unfolds in each work, where the sculptural element is translated into diverse forms. The artist reuses materials she finds in her studio, from plastics that she burns and stretches, to other sculptures, creating pieces with formal but also conceptual depth.
Color and light dominate the compositions, which are perceived differently depending on where they are viewed from. This is something intentional on behalf of the artist, who transfers to art her incessant search through the recesses of memory to turn each work into form, but also into voids, in the same way in which memories are formed from concretions, but also abstraction.
In her creative process she recognizes that she needs a lot of time and solitude "to review my thoughts", and this is what we see here: a search for evocation in the visual, tangible in each piece but ethereal in its beginning, as if we were watching the fragment of a memory materialize. That invisible presence to which Hugo alludes becomes corporeal in Brigou's works.
