Galería Hilario Galguera/El Cuarto de Máquinas and LLYC Foundation are pleased to present the collective exhibition PUERTAS DE ESPERANZA (DOORS OF HOPE) in collaboration with the LGBTIQ+ Refuge Casa Frida.
PUERTAS DE ESPERANZA is an initiative that aims to highlight the resilience, courage, and efforts of LGBTIQ+ community members who were forced to leave their homes in search of authenticity. Through a collaborative effort between LLYC Foundation, Casa Frida refuge, and Gallery Hilario Galguera/El Cuarto de Máquinas, the project brought together individuals from the LGBTIQ+ community with various national and international artists to reinterpret their stories using a door as a canvas.
Each intervened door aims to represent the closed doors at home that people left behind and those that opened thanks to their quest for authenticity. For this initiative, we invited seven national and international artists to positively reframe the life stories of seven people who have lived or are living at Casa Frida, an LGBTIQ+ refuge. The intervention is an effort to celebrate and acknowledge the life stories of people who have sought refuge at Casa Frida. The seven artists are Denisse Noriega (México), Alexis Martínez (México), Issa Salliander (Sweden), Bárbara Lázara (México), Daniel Dugan (USA), Yupica ( Japan), and Israel González (México).
The artistic work done on the doors will be presented in a temporary exhibition at Galería Hilario Galguera, Mexico City, from November 15, 2023, to January 13, 2024, with the aim of raising funds to create more safe spaces at Casa Frida. Additionally, Casa Frida can receive donations from the public through www.puertasdeesperanza.com.
