At Art Taipei 2015 Galerie Urs Meile will present a selection of recent works by Li Gang, Tobias Rehberger and Yan Xing.
We will show Li Gang’s (1986) installation Blooming (2014, wood, clay, 350 pieces, 5-80 cm high) and two of his new paintings (Raining, 2015, oil on hand-made canvas, 143 . 143 cm; Ripe Fruit, 2015, oil on hand-made canvas, 145 x145 cm). Li Gang experiments with various media to pursue new aesthetic possibilities. His recent endeavors in painting consist of coarse handmade hemp canvases on which he paints magnified details. In doing so, Li Gang draws attention to the relationship between the painting and the medium on which the paint is applied. Li Gang was one of the participating artists of the touring exhibition Inside China: L’Intérieur du Géant, which started at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris last year, before being shown at the venues of K11 art foundation in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
At the Public sector of Art Taipei we will exhibit Tobias Rehberger’s (1966) large-scale installation Die Welt kurz vor Erfindung des Tiefen Tellers -世界在汤盘发明之前 (2014, watercolor on paper, colored porcelain, wood, overall dimension: 577 x350 x565 cm). The work combines porcelain and watercolor, which both function as references to traditional Chinese crafts or techniques. The hand-painted watercolor tiles cover the entire room and create an optical effect, that if you look at it and walk past, it appears to move. At the booth we will have three wax sculptures by the artist.
The latest exhibition by Yan Xing (1986), titled Thief, opened at the end of August at Galerie Urs Meile Beijing. This exhibition featured a series of new works in a variety of media, including installation, video, and photography. The works were dealing with Yan Xing’s research on negativity, resistance, and order. Three of the photographs at Art Taipei are from the body of work titled Tendon (all: 2015, photograph (b/w), ultra giclée, 120 . 96 cm (print), edition of 5 + 1 AP), which was based on Yan Xing’s personal investigation of his aesthetics and technique, his relationship with the rituals of art, and his training and artistic attitude.
