We start off our consecutive series of three exhibitions investigating contemporary abstract painting with Klaas Kloosterboer:
For Klaas Kloosterboer (NL) the process of painting is the core of his definition of painting. So he explores the possibilities of creating a 'picture' in different directions, he sprays, paints the canvas, he cuts, sews, or stuffs the canvas with straw. In this manner, pictorial objects and moving images are created in a very light and slightly humorous way questioning the medium of painting overall. 'I like to doubt and I like to make doubt a constructive position. Probably also attracted to the romantic , the tragedy and the failure.' – Klaas Kloosterboer
Abstraction is immanent to the principle of painting anyway. Through the reduction to two-dimensionality and the illusion of colour, there is already an extreme separation of painting and the depicted reality. If one takes these steps consistently further, one increasingly distances oneself from any form of depiction. Just as every painting is abstract, every painting follows a conception. And also there, if one goes this way consistently further, one comes over the abstract expressionism, to the conceptual painting of the 60s and 70s up to the Radical Painting of the 80s.
Now, figuration seems ubiquitous. This has led us to look for artistic positions that move and assert themselves beyond these trends. For this reason we have chosen one female painter and three male painters to illuminate aspects of abstract painting! today. Of course we are aware that we can only examine this area exemplarily and extremely incomplete, nevertheless we want to make a statement for a fresh look at abstract tendencies in painting today.
We show Klaas Kloosterboer, Anna Leonhardt and Yusuke Komuta in a successive series of solo exhibitions in winter and spring 2023/24 at Galerie Zink Waldkirchen and thus exemplarily examine a significant aspect of contemporary painting.
