Pearl Lam Galleries is delighted to present Somnyama Ngonyama (Hail the Dark Lioness), a solo exhibition by one of the most acclaimed South-African based visual activists and photographer Zanele Muholi, and in collaboration with Muholi Arts Project (BaMu).
Following the exhibition last year at the Tate Modern in London, this new exhibition features over fifty staged photographs of Muholi's portraits that they have been working on since 2012. These autobiographical and highly personal portraits express 'the journey, self image, and possibilities of a black person in today's global society', in the artist's own words. A selection of paintings and beadwork that are related to Muholi's aesthetics will also be on view to provide a broader perspective for understanding Muholi's multifaceted art practice.
