SETAREH is excited to present an exhibition by Janice Guy. The work of Janice Guy, self-portraits, is born out of the action of photography. Evolved through her studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in the 1970s, first with Klaus Rinke and subsequently with Bernd and Hilla Becher, her starkly composed images were shaped by their objective and serial approach. However, for Guy, the action of photographing becomes a subject in itself. Compositionally complex and shot in the reflective surfaces of domestic spaces, the camera and the artist are essentially collaborative subjects in these pictures. At the same time her lens points straight at the viewer, confounding the roles of photographer and model, unsettling the directional gaze of the one who looks and the one who is seen.
