SETAREH X is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition Post Language Realm / Variation by Japanese artist Yuya Suzuki.
Post Language Realm / Variation presents the artist's series of "archegraph studies". Yuya Suzuki formulated this term in 2016 for the artworks resulting from a process of transforming recognizable elements from the metropolis into a synthesized linguistic landscape. This exhibition has been developed as a variation of the project first presented at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in 2021 and showcases artworks created from the urban narratives he gathered during his time in Berlin. On view will be drawings, 3D objects and sculptures, animation works and video projections, accompanied by a light installation.
Yuya Suzuki's interdisciplinary practice is an exploration of cultural symbolism drawn from the structures of a society: particularly the architecture of its cities. Suzuki explores the metropolitan in which he is located, aesthetically analyzing the environment surrounding him. The artist records objects, buildings, public furniture, local vegetation, etc., when a shape, a texture or any visual remark captures his attention. Following the observation, a semiotic transformation takes place in which Suzuki abstracts the elements gathered from the urban environment through an extended drawing process to simplify compositions to the essential elements related to its origin. This process of linguistic transformation that takes place opens the possibility to question the context surrounding these quotidian spaces. Whereas the visual cognition might recognize some elements or gestures, the artistic method takes into consideration, and makes use of, the sensory stimuli that could create another idea in the viewer's mind.
Developed from these drawings, additional artworks emerge, transitioning from flat into 3D objects. Sculptures originate from those signifiers reworked on paper and appear as objects in our landscape, framed emotively through animated video and light projections. These elements fragment the surrounding space, taking into consideration the wide-ranging perspectives experienced in the layers of the metropolis itself.
