Alexandra Standen is a young emerging Australian artist whose work explores the subtleties of relationships between people and the spaces they inhabit. Standen creates ceramic sculptures that are simultaneously organic and structured, suggesting themselves as artefacts of a forgotten past. Alexandra creates ceramic sculptural objects that are natural, structural and contained.
Read MoreHer works explore the possibilities of arrangement through a collection of related forms, and through this examine ideas of ritual, ordinariness and contemplation. Working primarily with clay, Standen’s sensitively hand-shaped objects facilitate a dialogue between human contact and a naturally occurring material that carries associations of the primordial and pre-historical. Amongst a nuanced visual language of ladders, tiles, orbs and vessels, Standen’s deeply personal works are at once fragile and elemental.
Standen has exhibited in a number of group exhibitions and launched her first solo exhibition in 2013. She was also the 2012 recipient of the Sidney Myer Emerging Ceramic Artist Award from the Shepparton Art Museum.
