Born in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province in 1991, Yuyu Wang received her master's degree in sculpture from the Slade School of Art, University College London in 2016. Currently working as an independent artist in Shanghai.
Read MoreYuyu Wang's creative practice centres on sculpture, focusing on the threshold state of 'movement'; between the body and objects. In an era of increasingly specialised division of labor industrial and technological advancements, the artist uses the body as the main clue to seek and capture the perplexing and chaotic breath emitted by the human flesh. Using silicone, fabric, and metal to construct another framework detached from the body, bringing the viewer into a concrete reality. Different materials contain different individual emotions, evoking a more intimate observation and contemplation.
The artist's sculptures immerse us in familiar yet unfamiliar scenes by combining different media such as images, materials, words, actions, and sounds. They allow us to explore the 'nameless' artificial landscapes in cities, nature, and film sets and investigate the possibilities of narrative weaving in specific contexts. The body is rejuvenated in the cold heap of materials; abstract subjects with human elements but detached from reality fluctuate between visual and sensory experiences, evoking intimacy and detachment. The artwork is like the artist's alter ego, with instant detachment and archiving characteristics. It is up to the reader to recognise which 'Yuyu Wang' is the story's narrator.
