Artist Andrea Chung's upcoming solo show at MOCA aims to bring together recent considerations of Black liberation and an Afrofuturist utopia in conversation with older works. A central theme will be the artist's explorations of Motherhood and how the trauma of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade impacted the Diaspora. Working across mediums, Andrea Chung's work investigates the colonial as it relates to motherhood, Blackness, and the imagination. Using concepts like Drexciya as a springboard, she recontextualizes history and offers up alternate possibilities for self-concept. Andrea Chung lives and works in San Diego, California.
