We first clocked the work of Iraqi artist Mohammed Sami when Modern Art showed his work in their Art Basel and Frieze London presentations last year, shortly after taking him on. He's now got his first solo show with the London gallery at their Helmet Row space.
Here, an incredibly striking presentation of autobiographical paintings evokes memories of unease and desolation growing up in conflict-torn Iraq. The textures and depths of light that Sami applies to the objects within his frames is particularly remarkable—a feature that initially drew us to the Goldsmiths graduate's work.
Sami was included in our Five Artists to Watch in 2022 and will feature in The London Open, the triennial exhibition at London's Whitechapel Gallery in the summer.
