'The circle–defined as the set of all points equidistant from a given (center) point–is among the most important perfect figures of Euclidian geometry. Finding its area through a construction of polygons leads to the graphical representation of a kaleidoscopically fanned-out ornament whose symmetry is constitutive of its nature and that reveals individual perspectives: thus a hexagon can inscribe itself into a circle, while its twelve-sided counterpart envelops it externally. Similar to the alignment of these infinitely many points around a center, the thoughts, considerations, and ideas in the works of Matthias Bitzer circle repeatedly around the question of identity, authenticity, and the construction of reality. Continuous circling around an object with the goal of convergence makes possible a change in view thanks to a change in perspective, yet equally contains a retarding factor, in the sense of a relinquishment of a concrete focus. For his solo exhibition at Almine Rech Gallery, Matthias Bitzer has created a comprehensive installation. Individual works are arranged and integrated in a manner that creates two narrative spatial structures that demand wholebody perception and the movement of the viewer: portraits on canvas, sculptural object, light boxes, collages and C-prints with geometrical all-over patterns serve as representatives for his genre-transcending approach that is based on a wide variety of artistic techniques and materials.'
