During the March 2018 Beijing Gallery Week, Spencer Sweeney, the famous underground culture magnate of New York, exhibited New York's important creative community with himself at the helm in a show entitled New York by Night at HdM GALLERY Beijing space. The show is based on Sweeney's interpersonal connection in New York City, and brings together 17 celebrated artists including Kokakrit Arunanondchai, Peter Doig, Urs Fisher, Jacqueline Humphries, Elizabeth Peyton, Pieter Schoolwerth, Rirkrit Tiravanija, etc. They are artists and musicians active in New York who are all personal friends of Sweeney's. The exhibition recreates the vibe of one of the most creative cultural communities in New York during the past two decades.
After nearly two years of cooperation following the success of New York by Night, HdM Gallery planned to hold a solo exhibition of Spencer Sweeney's own artworks in March 2020. Unfortunately, due to the outbreak of Coronavirus, the gallery decided to postpone the exhibition, with the opening time yet to be determined.
Spencer Sweeney started his artistic journey in the late 90's; he is widely known in New York as an artist, musician, DJ and club owner. He and Lizzi Bougatsos were members of the seminal rock band 'Actress'. At the same time, Sweeney is also popular in the fashion industry, he collaborated with Lady Dior's project in 2017, and launched his own limited-edition Dior handbags with 9 other renowned artists. Sweeney's works express his sharp resistance to the traditional norms defined by the art system with gorgeous tones and strong colour contrast. His proficiency in multiple techniques is also reflected in his art, whether it is installations, colourful collages, cartoon paintings, or glamorous self-portraits always avoiding a style that can be easily identified and labeled.
Spencer Sweeney was born in 1973 in Philadelphia. He graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and now lives and works in New York City. He was exhibited widely including at MoMA PS1, the Whitney Biennale, the Modern Institute Glasgow, High Museum of Art Atlanta, Contemporary Fine Arts Berlin, Gavin Brown's Enterprise New York and Gagosian.
