Meridians: Jose Dávila | M34
Los Límites de lo Posible (2019). Installation. Recinto, volcanic rock, raw sandstone boulders.
Originally produced for the Bienal de La Habana 2019, Jose Dávila’s installation for Meridians is comprised of six sculptures composed of recinto, a volcanic rock, and raw sandstone boulders. The interaction between the perfect geometric shapes of the recinto volumes and the capricious forms of the unaltered boulders, reveals a contrast, precariousness and playfulness which is an essential part of Dávila’s sculptural practice. Alternating between tension and rest, fragility and solidity, the material disparity highlights the collaboration between the different elements to achieve permanence and balance.
Meridians: Wu Chi-Tsung | M18
Cyano-Collage 064 (2019). Cyanotype photography, Xuan paper, acrylic gel. 118 1/8 x 236 1/4 inches.
Wu Chi-Tsung's 'Cyano-Collage' works explore the relationship between the image, it’s making, and the viewer’s perception. The Cyano-type process was invented in the 19th century to duplicate engineering drawings. Wu Chi-Tsung employs his own contemporary version of this process, by which he manipulates light sensitive cyanotype paper to create images that at a glance resemble traditional Chinese landscapes. Connecting Eastern and Western culture and art, Wu Chi-Tsung integrates traditional aesthetics with his own startling contemporary language.
