In Letsing diging, dpgp78 (kimjihwan, minsungsig) and shingwansoo have installed multiple devices throughout Whistle to create the atmosphere of sightseeing, encouraging viewers to confront unfamiliar scenes and situations. There are no strict guidelines or restrictions in terms of how individuals may determine their respective routes through, but the act of navigating through the structures may impose certain physical constraints. The artists have flexibly developed the form of their work in response to the specific site. The collaboration process resembles a form of play while also maintaining a sense of spontaneity and tension, akin to improvisational music. In this presentation, the exhibition space gradually reveals the artists' occupation of the exhibition space and invites viewers to explore the range of their individual consciousness and sensory perception based on their engagement with the works of the artists.
shingwansoo aims to generate a variety of playful environments through staged scenarios with outcomes that are site-specific and temporally unique, frequently involving gatherings or performances in an intangible form. The artist utilises attendees as agents to activate his work, through audiences gathering on-site, temporarily occupying both space and time. He incorporates not only playfulness but also adventurous elements such as liberation and deviation. For Letsing diging, the artist has constructed a slightly uncomfortable viewing path. The exhibition experience begins with viewers bowing their heads and bending at the waist. This constraint is perhaps similar to challenge in a game, transforming the experience into another form of play.
Since 2019, dpgp78 has been working together as a collective, engaging in multifaceted projects that cleverly navigate the contemporary art ecosystem and the institutions surrounding it. They share and replicate their drawings, arranging them organically in various artworks. dpgp78's practice seamlessly transcends composition, demonstrating adaptability to both the nature of the materials that serve as the background for the drawings but also where works are installed.
Previous examples of their work have incorporated rolls of toilet paper¹ where the image disintegrates upon use, tattoos on human skin, drawings filling up the walls and ceilings of a pub and performance venue², and collaborative illustrations for the children's book³. In this exhibition, dpgp78 made over a hundred plaster pieces of varying surfaces and volumes and employed markers, pencils, and pens for continuous drawing. The images represent the dialogues that traverse the boundary between reality and imagination. kimjihwan and minsungsig explore the consumption of art in contemporary society, attempting to reuse and mass-produce their imagery. They reconsider the meaning of art consumption and ownership in modern society through a paradoxically dark, but comic narrative.
